Life in the UAE for People of Determination

The UAE has made significant strides in accommodating and empowering “People of Determination” (the term used in the UAE for people with disabilities); it has made significant strides in fostering an inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities, including those with autism. Remarkably, the nation’s approach centers on creating a society where all individuals can navigate public spaces with ease. This blog explores the various services and property developments specifically designed to enhance the quality of life for those with disabilities within the UAE.

Innovative Initiatives and Accessibility Features

In recent years, the UAE government has implemented several initiatives to improve accessibility. Public spaces, including shopping malls, parks, and transportation systems, are increasingly designed with the needs of people with disabilities in mind. Some key features include tactile paving for navigation, ramps for wheelchair access, and designated resting area. Furthermore, many educational institutions have already adopted specialized programs tailored to children of special needs, ensuring they receive quality education in an accommodating environment.

In Dubai, People of Determination have access to taxi services. They are designed to be accessible and to accommodate different disabilities. These taxis can be identified through the blue special needs icon on the side doors and back window.

In Abu Dhabi, Zayed International Airport has recently announced the opening of a new sensory space that caters to travelers with sensory sensitivities. The spaces offer a relaxing atmosphere for people of determination who wish for a calming area before they fly, which include thoughtful light displays, bubble tubes and soft furnishings for utmost comfort.

Inclusivity in Hospitality & Property Development

The real estate sector in the UAE has also embraced inclusivity, with property developers actively creating living spaces that are accessible to all. Many new residential projects incorporate universal design principles, offering wider doorways, open floor plans, and additional en suite-bedrooms on the ground floor for convenience. Additionally, the UAE’s drive towards inclusivity is not only restricted to public facilities but extends to private sectors through various awareness campaigns and training programs for employees. Such efforts equip individuals working in hospitality and retail with the skills necessary to assist customers with disabilities effectively.
